Introduction: Embarking on a Camera Club Adventure
If you’re sitting there, camera in hand, wondering whether to join a photography club, let me introduce you to the Lytham St. Annes Photographic Society (LSAPS), and share a little story. It’s about a once-lone photographer (that’s me!) who took the leap into the surprisingly warm waters of this photographic society. Spoiler alert: it turned out to be a great decision.
My Photography Beginnings
Ah, 1996, a time when cell phones were the size of bricks and the internet was still a screaming newborn. That’s when my love affair with photography began. A photography club was but a mere twinkle in my eye. It was right around the time my daughter was doing her GCSE photoshoots. I was really just the taxi driver, ferrying Jo between locations and observing, but then something “clicked” – yes, pun intended – and I was smitten with the art of capturing light myself. I was hooked!
The Solo Photography Journey
Throughout the years, my photography journey was a solo adventure. I found joy in meandering through untamed beaches and traversing rolling hills, with only my thoughts and camera as companions. Sharing my images on social media brought me a quiet satisfaction, and the rare occasion of printing a piece to adorn my wall felt like a personal triumph. Even more gratifying was knowing that pieces I had sold found new homes, gracing the walls of others. Whilst enjoying this solitary contentment, the idea of joining a photography club had never sparked my interest.
Considering the Leap into a Photographic Community
The idea of joining a group of fellow photographers felt as foreign as learning ballet. But, with retirement on the horizon and advice ringing in my ears about the importance of a social life, I took the plunge. Mixed with nerves and curiosity, I signed up for my local Photographic Society – LSAPS.
First Impressions of the Photography Club
Expecting debates over Nikon vs. Canon, I was pleasantly surprised to find a welcoming crowd, eager to chat about our shared passion for photography. I wasn’t alone in my newness; there were 18 of us, all embarking on this journey together.
Discovering the Essence of the Photographic Society
This community of photographers was more than gear and gadgets; it was about shared enthusiasm and love for photography. My initial fears of inadequacy quickly faded, as I found myself among a diverse mix of photographers, from beginners to seasoned ex pros, all eager to share and learn.
Photographic Society Competitions: A Friendly Challenge
Now, it’s well known that photography clubs are synonymous with competitions. My work was appraised by the club council and I was placed in the intermediate group. I took the plunge and started entering my images. The competitions turned out to be fun and incredibly motivating. After the first season, I found myself in the Advanced group – a testament to the club’s nurturing environment.
And, the icing on the cake. One of my images was chosen by the Council of LSAPS to grace the posters and flyers to advertise the club’s Annual Exhibition of over 600 members’ images.
The Photography Club Revelation
Joining this group of photography lovers turned out to be a revelation. Here’s a snapshot of my experiences:
-
- I immersed myself in comprehensive tutorials covering the A to Z of photography.
-
- I mastered the art of printing and mounting my photographs, a skill that once seemed out of reach.
-
- I ventured into the world of studio portraiture, experimenting with light and shadows.
-
- I experienced an exciting photoshoot, working with a model donning diverse costumes across a variety of settings.
-
- I enjoyed camaraderie and shared insights during photo walks with fellow club members, each journey a new discovery.
The Magic of Photography Club Connections
Yet the true magic of the club was in the connections I made. There were tutorials and workshops, yes, but also laughter, shared experiences, and encouragement. The photo walks turned into social outings, the studio workshops into collective learning experiences, and the guest presentations into inspirational gatherings.
For anyone hesitant about becoming part of a photographer’s circle, fearing judgment or inadequacy, let me assure you: these clubs are about community, growth, and shared passion. It’s not about how good you are when you start; it’s about the journey of improvement and the joy of learning together.
Today, I’m not just a better photographer; I’m part of a vibrant community. For a visual taste of this transformation, I warmly invite you to view my Photography Club Gallery.
