ARPS Distinction
Where Light Meets Shadow
ARPS Achieved November 2025
I’m proud to have been awarded my ARPS (Associate of the Royal Photographic Society) for a 15-image panel exploring the quiet atmosphere of cathedral interiors — spaces shaped by soft light, shadow, texture, and stillness.
This project became a personal study of calm and contemplation. Rather than photographing cathedrals as grand landmarks, I wanted to create images that feel intimate — inviting you to pause, look slowly, and feel the space.
Statement of Intent
I’m drawn to quiet light held within darkness, and to soft shadows.
These images reflect the peaceful, contemplative atmosphere I find in sacred spaces.
I search for fleeting moments—glances of light or shadow play that may be missed by others, before they disappear.
Rather than the wide, sweeping grandeur of cathedrals, I focus on small, intimate scenes where light becomes a voice.
Through light, shadow, and tone, I aim to express what I felt—a sense of calm, serenity, and inner stillness.
These sacred spaces offer a reprieve from the external world, inviting a slower gaze and gentle reflection.
ARPS Hanging Panel
Panel layout
A big part of the ARPS process is how the images work together. Here is the final hanging plan used for assessment — designed to create a calm rhythm, with visual echoes between light, shape, texture, and tone.
The Project in Brief
This ARPS panel is a 15-image series focused on:
quiet interior scenes and details
soft natural light and shadow
texture, form, and tonal harmony
a calm, contemplative viewing experience
a consistent look and flow across the set
Why this project mattered to me
I’ve been taking photographs for around 30 years, but in recent years photography has shifted from a long-loved passion into a central part of my life. This project became a way of bringing together what I value most in photography: atmosphere, feeling, and intention.
Cathedral interiors offered exactly the kind of subject that suits my way of seeing — places where the light constantly changes, where silence has a presence of its own, and where small details can hold enormous emotional weight.
How I made the panel
I worked slowly and deliberately, returning to the idea of “quiet light” again and again. I photographed with consistency in mind — thinking not only about each individual image, but how it would sit within a sequence.
Editing was done with a light touch, focusing on tonal control, balance, and cohesion across the set. The final panel was refined through careful selection and sequencing, ensuring the images feel connected and intentional when viewed together.
The 15 images
Below are the individual images from my ARPS panel. While each photograph stands on its own, they were created and selected to be viewed as a complete body of work — a quiet journey through light, shadow, and stillness.
